Asklepios Klinik Bad Salzungen
Merging two existing nurse call systems
The Asklepios area in Bad Salzungen consists of two hos-pitals networked with one another via an optical fibre connection. The two hospitals have a total of 430 rooms, including 279 beds, equipped with a new nurse call IP as a hybrid solution.
In each room a call/cancel and presence button was in-stalled as well as a bed wall unit and a call button with plug-in contact for a bed operating device. In the bath–room, a pull/pull-to-cancel and presence button was in-stalled.In the nurse desk, SIP touch displays and small nurse dis-plays with call and presence buttons have been installed.
Challenge
- Two different nurse call systems in two seperate buildings
- Old existing cable network
- Old equipement does not meet modern standards
- Outdated paging system
Solution
- Optical fibre connections between the two hospitals
- Installation of one joint nurse call system ‘iCall’
- Speech and message commu–nication via DECT-protocol and central communication system
Result
- A continuous and futureproof nurse call system in both hospitals using one network
- Only one alarm server between nurse call and telephone/DECT system
- Remote dial-in on all installed modules

Challenge
In both hospitals, old nurse call systems from different manufacturers (Ackermann ClinoPhone 95 system and a Zettler Multitone pager system) were in use. Both systems had already been discontinued by the manufacturers. Spare parts were only available sparingly and with time-consuming procurement – in addition, both systems did not meet the current DIN VDE 0834, so a complete renovation was necessary. Another challenge was to implement a new continuous nurse call system with networking of both hospitals into one system. The new system also needed to be flexible in the area of programming, new future-oriented technology and alarm server could only have one connection between the nurse call system and the telephone/DECT system. Furthermore, the existing cable network had to be reused. The new nurse call system needed to perform remote dial-in on all installed modules. The use of the alarm server also had to allow flexible alarm assignment on the DECT phones as well as on smartphones for technical alarms.
Solution
The new nurse call system was necessary to obtain a uniform system for both hospitals in the future. In order to function as one joint system, a optical fibre cable needed to be installed between the two buildings. The central IT-infrastructure required renovation before the conversion of the rooms could be carried out. Due to missing or expensive spare parts and limited functionality, the old pager system was replaces by a mobile DECT-sys-tem. In each hospital, the central system was equiped with IP-modules and the network connection took place via corresponding data switches, which meant that only one data connection to the telephone/DECT system was neces–sary. This connection takes place from the IP Nurse call system directly via IP to the alarm server and from there via SIP to the telephone/DECT system. This mobile solution could therefore be used as a nurse call station. The renovation was possible because the patient could always trigger an emergency call during the reconstruction, and the emergency call would be displayed on the associated DECT telephones as clear text.

Our client chose the new nurse call system because of its future-oriented technology and easy (wireless programmation).
